The movie is SO different from the novella, and I preferred the original story much more.
Albert Nobbs by George Moore
In the book, Helen is described as rather drab and course, whereas in the movie she’s very pretty. Then one day she happens to meet another ‘perhasper’ and he plants the idea in that she should get married to a woman. This time, however, I sailed through it. He chooses the maid Helen Wasikowska who is already embroiled in an affair with the boiler man Johnson.
The novella, Albert Nobbs by George Moore was originally published in in A Storyteller’s Holiday and later, inrevised for publication in Celibate Lives.
Set in a posh hotel in nineteenth-century Dublin, Albert Nobbs is the story of an unassuming waiter hiding a shocking secret. The two form a friendship that cumulates with Hubert suggesting to Albert he ask a woman to marry him so he can have a companion.
Moore’s writing is wonderful, and whilst I found the genders confusing in places – switching, as they do, from ‘he’ to ‘she’ and back again when describing the same character – it did not take away any of my enjoyment of the story.
Alfred is a girl who doesn’t realize she has dreams. Thanks for telling us about the problem.
In the book, as in the movie, Albert aspires to find siingular to love and to buy himself a tobacconist store and, in the book, his interaction with Hugo is limited to a night of newly kindled friendship and personal revelations. I nobsb the digital version for Kindle via Amazon but, as far as the digital version is concerned, I was somewhat disappointed.

Then you have the narrator, who was maybe a lawyer, speaking to an ‘Alec’? I was so intrigued by it after reading her thesis through that I immediately downloaded it tye my Kindle and read it a couple of days later. There is no more fitting description for the constant conscious struggle of gender-queer in their everyday interactions as the unfamiliarly familiar.

Paperbackpages. I tried to read the book last year, but couldn’t get into it, having difficulty adjusting to the “story within a story” style of its writing. Hubert, who reveals that he Mr. Instead he wishes to marry and have a companion throughout his drag career. To be able to lead an independent and free life, industrious but introverted Albert hides a secret from the world, especially his fellow staff at a Dublin hotel.

Pamela rated it it was amazing May 08, I would caution other readers though, it is a bit difficult to read in some areas, the author makes no break between speakers in the story, so sometimes it is difficult to assign speech directly, sometimes it takes a little puzzling out to understand. The character of Albert Nobbs was very touching and Glenn Close played it so well.
I just found it a little tbe to read and a little formal for my taste. Return to Book Page. The two scuffle and Albert is hit in the head, tragically dying through internal injury and thus ending the dream of marriage and independence.

The story of his life is rather tragic, but Albert never dwells on it, the story concentrates more on his dreams and his attempts to find happiness.
